Depression to Happiness

Young Children and Therapy

According to psychologists, the earlier we begin therapy, the greater the chances of success. Child psychology is very popular now. The public, parents, and teachers are increasingly growing aware of how early childhood influences life. Parents consider psychotherapy for young children for two main reasons. Some parents want to address psychological disorders that often seen first seen in childhood and others want to address parent/infant bonding or attachment issues.

Serious psychological disorders can actually be diagnosed and treated during early childhood. For instance, autism can be recognized before a child’s first birthday. Further, anxiety disorders can appear during the first two years of life, and schizophrenia can be diagnosed in children as young as 5 years old. In order to notice problems, parents should be aware of the stages of development that children go through. If you see that your child starts talking very late, consult a professional. You might find out that the worry is unnecessary, but you might also uncover a disorder. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Parent and child bonding is very important. Infants come into the world with temperaments that may or not work for their parents. Shy and calm babies are sometimes born into very loud families. Demanding and loud babies are sometimes born into quiet and withdrawn families. With time, these differences sort themselves out naturally.

This is not always the case, however. Sometimes, the differences impact family life. This makes the parents frustrated and the infant can be harmed because of this. The harm may be long term. If parents experience longstanding difficulties with bonding, they need to consult a psychologist. These difficulties may include accepting their babies or dealing with the demands of their babies. It can never hurt to make a phone call. You may need help.

Psychologists are skilled and trained in observing family dynamics and working with parents to bond more comfortably with a child. To do so, parents can improve in many ways. They can play with the baby and soothe him or her. They can also provide the baby with face-to-face contact and vocal imitation exercises. Through therapy, parents can also learn to adapt and react to infant fussiness in a more soothing and effective way. They can also learn to improve their communication skills and sleep disturbances. Treatments usually involve both parents and child and go on for several months.

Other issues that child psychologists deal with include sibling rivalry, setting healthy boundaries, and dealing with in-laws. They sometimes work with parents separately, when it comes to these issues. Further, when kids become toddlers, therapists can work with the children separately on issues that focus on the development of self-esteem, independence, interpersonal skills, and communication.

There are many different ways that therapists can help kids and parents. A parent-child relationship can be a very beautiful thing, therefore, if you feel like you need any help with it due to possible psychological disorders, boding issues, or other reasons, make sure that you contact a psychologist
